“Smart phone as a segment is witnessing rapid growth and we are expecting to touch 20 per cent market share in the category by the end of calendar year 2010,” Mr Yadav, said while talking to newspersons after announcing the launch of smart phones Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5 here on Wednesday.
The total market for smart phones in the country could be close to about 2.5 million units by the year-end, he pointed out. The company plans to launch about 45 new handsets during the current year, out of which around 10 would be in the smart phones category.
“With wireless tele-density in the country touching 54.10 per cent at present, and 3G expected to provide the next trigger for growth, Samsung has endeavoured to democratise the smartphone experience, bringing down price points significantly,” he added.
Samsung India is in favour of higher indigenisation and is working with Indian Cellular Association (ICA) to help develop component manufacturing in the country.
“Currently, we manufacture about 17 models out of the 44 models sold in the Indian market,” according to the company spokesperson.
Companies currently import critical components such as motherboards and chips and assemble them here in the country.
