The supercomputer, built by the National University of Defence Technology and installed in the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, has power equivalent to 175,000 laptops, according to executives from Nvidia.
With sustained performance of 2.5 petaflops, the Chinese computer is 30 percent faster than the second most powerful supercomputer in the world, installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, United States, according to Nvidia.
Nvidia, best known for the design of graphics cards used by users of high-powered computers, is promoting its technology for use in addition to computer graphics purposes, including supercomputers used in simulations of astrophysical and other tasks requiring high mathematical ability.
Supercomputers are also used in medicine, oil exploration and weather forecasting.
While the traditional central processors used in computers are designed to perform large calculations very quickly, one after another, GPUs offer optimal performance on a large number of small calculations simultaneously, making them appropriate for specific varieties of tasks.
