Electronic readers have soared in popularity in recent years and will continue to gain momentum among Americans, but perhaps to remain as a niche occupied primarily by dedicated bibliophiles.

About eight percent of readers in the United States employ electronic readers. But a Harris Interactive poll released on Wednesday showed that about 12 percent of Americans said they were unlikely to obtain such a device in the next six months.

The survey of 2,775 U.S. adults showed that between the owners of electronic readers the chance to buy books is much higher than among other respondents.

About a fifth of users of electronic readers have acquired 21 or more books over the past 12 months, an average well above the 12 per cent of ordinary consumers who bought at a similar pace. Electronic books now account for three percent of book sales, but analysts anticipate that this proportion up to quadruple by 2015.

For all its popularity, electronic readers seem destined to remain popular mainly among the most avid bibliophiles. About 60 percent of Americans polled in the survey said they were unlikely to acquire an electronic reader in the coming months.
