Reading is simply good for the brain

European scientists confirmed something everyone already knew to be true: literacy is good for the brain. However scientifically prove the fact, and a sense of why this happens.

Cognitive neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene, Director of the Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit INSERM-CEA, France, and partners in Brazil (Centre for Research in Neurosciences, Hospital Sarah Lago), Belgium (Brussels University) and Portugal (Lisbon University), have used magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the brains of 63 adults, including 10 illiterates, 22 who learned to read at age 31 and who were literate in childhood.

The investigation encompassed the same time, Brazilian and Portuguese populations because they are countries with populations where many children from rural and isolated environments do not go to school.

Scientists have discovered that the brains of adults who could read had more dynamic responses to printed words, not only in cortical areas for reading but also in brain regions that process visual information. There were similar responses in areas related to spoken information. These responses were observed in both groups literate.

On the other hand, illiterate wore a larger part of the brain area that responds to images of faces than the literate individuals, which may mean that the literate have less skill in recognizing faces
