Google's biggest investment in social media, Google Wave, is no more. In a blog post yesterday night, Google announced that the company, "doesn't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product," though the code will be made open source. This is no surprise as Google Wave never succeeded in finding a place in the users' good books, even after the invite-only process was scrapped.
Google Wave has seen crests and troughs much bigger than the ones ruling the ocean. It was one of the most hyped products of 2009. It did manage to hold on to its place thanks to the invite-only process of sign-in. Some capitalised on the anticipation of peole wanting to get access and sold invites on ebay. Soon after that, everyone tried to find methods to use the Wave effectively. But finally, after some months the buzz completely disappeared and most users shared that the Wave was of no use.
The product could have been successful had it been integrated into Gmail. But, then again, Buzz hasn't really worked too well either. Google Wave is just another event in Google's long line of attempts at social media, an area in which the company is now reportedly eyeing a new break. Drawing shutters on the Wave is just another way of confirming that.
