Tata DoCoMo unveils free ‘voice calls' plan

Hinting at a shift of focus of telecom companies to revenues from data, Tata DoCoMo, the first mobile company to introduce the paisa-a-second billing scheme, has come out with a free ‘voice' plan. The plan allows pre-paid customers to make free voice calls to any network in India.

The company will charge them only for their data usage. GPRS surfing will be charged at 1 paisa per 1 kb.

The company has decided to test the waters in Andhra Pradesh by rolling out the plan there.

There, however, is a rider in the term free for voice calls. The company announced a ‘Fair Usage Policy' that restricts the length of the free run. On any given day, the user can make voice calls for not more than 40 minutes, Mr N.V. Subbarao, Regional Head (South-East) of Tata DoCoMo, said.

The GSM brand of Tata Tele would sell ‘Voice Free Recharge' vouchers in denominations of Rs 200, Rs 350 and Rs 500 with a validity of 10, 20 and 30 days, respectively, he said in a press release on Tuesday.

The company said the new plan was introduced keeping in view the steady increase in the usage of data, particularly in the age group of 18-24.
