Attractively priced mini diesel SUV ready to take on Maruti Gypsy & Scorpio base variants
A new segment of SUV has been created today, called the mini-SUV, with the launch of the Premier Rio. Priced at Rs 5.25 lakh, ex-showroom, Pune, for the base variant, the Rio is targetted as a luxury mini-SUV that will act as an alternative to premium B-segment hatchbacks, as well as SUVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy and Mahindra Bolero Invader and Scorpio M2Di.
The Premier Rio will be offered initially at 20 dealerships across the country and it plans to ramp that number up in the coming months. These dealerships will be different from those that sell Premier commercial vehicles - the Roadstar and the Sigma.
VERSIONS :
The Rio, based on a Daihatsu model, will be sourced from China through a component supply agreement with the Zotye group. It seats five people and is powered by Premier's 1489 cc turbo diesel engine built on Peugeot technology delivering close to 65BHP and has fuel efficiency of about 16 km per litre.
The Rio will sell in three versions with the base model priced at around Rs 5.25 lakh and the deluxe model at Rs six lakh, ex- showroom Pune. Only the diesel version will be available in the country and deliveries will start from December.
