Bharti Airtel Plans To Invest $100 Million In Malawi

Bharti Airtel is looking to invest $100 million in Malawi in the next three years. The Indian mobile phone operator reportedly had fruitful discussions with the Malawi government on developing the mobile communications industry in the African country. Earlier this month, the company closed its $10.7 billion (approx. Rs 49,700 crore) acquisition of Kuwait-based Zain Telecom's African business, including in Malawi. The deal is the biggest overseas acquisition by an Indian company.

"We plan to invest $100 million in Malawi in the next three years to improve coverage and reach out to Malawi's rural farmers ... and help the country's economy grow," Reuters quoted Manoj Kohli, chief executive officer, Bharti Africa as saying. With the acquisition of Zain Telecom's African business, Bharti became the world's fifth largest mobile player with a subscriber base of over 180 million in 18 Asian and African nations. The company now targets 100 million subscribers and $5 billion revenue by 2012-13 in Africa alone.

The company also expects to increase its customer base in Malawi to 7 million from the current 2.5 billion.
